Connecting to the Tesla Fleet API
The app asks for these right after you sign in. They are what brings in the battery, charging sessions and trips.
Tesla shows a list of tick boxes. iCar asks for five, and here is what each one opens:
- Profile Information
- Only what is needed to reach Tesla's right regional server. iCar reads neither your contact details, nor your picture, nor your referrals.
- Vehicle Information
- Battery, the charge in progress, tires, doors, software version and the car's alerts.
- Vehicle Location
- Finding the car on the map, naming your trips and announcing what is ahead on the road.
- Vehicle Commands
- Locking, opening a trunk, arming Sentry Mode, sending a destination to the car screen. Tesla offers no narrower permission: this one covers them all at once.
- Vehicle Charging Management
- iCar uses it to READ your Supercharger invoices, the only source of what you actually paid. Tesla files it under commands, but iCar neither starts nor stops any charging.
Final step
Turn on telemetry with the virtual key
iCar is an app registered and verified by Tesla. The virtual key paired with your vehicle is iCar's secure identifier. It lets your Tesla check that telemetry configuration messages really come from iCar. This adds a layer of security on top of the authentication token generated when you first sign in with Tesla.
