Facing your direction, not the other one
Where a camera's bearing is known, it is compared with your heading: if it watches the opposite carriageway, it is not announced. Enough alerts that match nothing, and you stop reading them.
That said, two cameras in three do not publish their bearing. Dropping them for want of knowing would remove most of the announcements, when most of them do concern you: those are shown. The split is made on what we know, never on a guess, and one alert too many is cleared with a glance at the sign.
Where the positions come from
The source is OpenStreetMap, a public database mapped and corrected by tens of thousands of contributors. iCar reimports it every week, area by area.
The import is guarded: if one area fails to answer, the update is cancelled rather than partly applied. A passing outage upstream must not empty the map of a whole region, and nobody would notice, since a missing camera cannot be seen.
What you are paying for
These positions are public. What requires a subscription here is not the data: it is the work of fetching it, keeping it current, matching it to your position and announcing it at the right moment, in the right direction, on a screen that is moving.
Without a subscription the screen simply shows nothing: no dot, no announcement, and above all no invitation to subscribe. An advert on a car screen in motion has no business being there.
An aid, not a permission
iCar displays information. It does not drive, and knows nothing of real road conditions: the speed that applies is the one on the signs and the one traffic and weather allow, never the one a screen suggests.
Rules on speed camera warning devices differ from country to country. Checking what is allowed where you drive is up to you.
